WHEN WERE YOUR ROOF GUTTERS LAST CLEANED?
Roof gutter cleaning is quite often overlooked, but an integral part of external home maintenance. Over time they fill up with leaves, dirt, moss, algae and debris, which lead to a whole array of problems such as:

Holding moisture leading to rusting gutters

Blocked water flow causing water ingress in heavy rainfall

Mould and other nasty contaminants entering rainwater tanks

Hosting pests such as snakes, ants, etc

Acting as a fire hazard on rural properties
Getting your gutters cleaned is recommended every 12 months, but more often when buildings are surrounded by trees or on rural properties. This is suggested to prevent buildup causing the above-listed complications, which saves you money long-term.
WHAT IF I HAVE GUTTER GUARDS?
Gutter guards are a plastic or metal mesh used to prevent leaves entering the gutters. It is usually either placed in the gutters rolled up, or fixed to the top of the gutter and the roof. A common misconception is that gutter guard stops the need to have your gutters cleaned, but this is not the case at all. Roll up gutter guard fails letting leaves down each side of it, and all other methods still let dirt, seeds and small bugs through. This usually causes a mixture of dirt, moss and algae which renders the gutter guard completely useless.
Gutter guard is only recommended on gutters that require cleaning of heavy leaves every 3 or 6 months, as it will prevent build up to a degree. They still require cleaning, but not quite as often as without the gutter guard.
